BTSNE Wrestlers Shinned at ‘Headlocks on the Hudson’
We brought 24 athletes and Boston and Providence to Headlocks on the Hudson in Troy, NY, June 10-11. The 2023 iteration was our fourth year competing in the event, and one of our largest groups yet. Headlocks on the Hudson, a marquee event on our spring schedule, showcased a highly-competitive outdoor tournament in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
“[The event was] really fun,” Boston Latin Academy student Adam El-Haddad said of the event. ”I enjoyed the setting of where we were wrestling and I also liked how the tournament was actually not like the others [I’ve been to]. Because there were a lot of food trucks and a lot of intense matches to watch and learn from. We also had some good competition and I felt like after I left I was a better wrestler.”
Our BTSNE Placewinners were as follows:
80 lbs: Emilio Santana: 3rd Place
115 lbs: Daniel Escobar: 3rd Place
126 lbs: Adam El Haddad: 2nd Place
115 lbs: Jovani Martinez: 2nd Place
125 lbs: Denzel Monterio: 1st Place
160 lbs: Kevon Carter-Stanley: 2nd Place
167 lbs: Kevon Graham: 3rd Place
132 lbs: Sincere Pompey: 1st Place
169 lbs: Jefreel Rivera Ramirez: 3rd Place
In addition to our student-athletes, Coach Lucas Johnson (Williams) entered the Men’s Open Division and took 1st place! We are happy to have Lucas returning to support us at Beat the Streets New England this summer, and our athletes enjoyed getting to compete alongside their coach at this great event!
“Going to Headlocks on the Hudson was one of the best off-season competition I’ve been to,” said Excel Academy junior and team captain Jamie Nunez . “The quality of freestyle/Greco competition was an exciting challenge for me. It was also nice to learn from some of the best Greco coaches and expand my knowledge in Olympic wrestling. Additionally, getting to hang out with friends from other areas of New England made the trip memorable.”
